ABSDISCOURSE: Call for Papers

*Socialism and Democracy* invites submissions of articles from academics,
graduate students, independent scholars, and activists for a special issue
on immigration edited by Marcella Bencivenni (Hostos Community College,
CUNY) and Ron Hayduk (Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY), to be
published in November 2008. We welcome contributions across disciplines -
history, political science, sociology, economics, anthropology, cultural
studies, visual arts - on various themes related to immigration and
ethnicity. Essays may center on a specific immigrant group in the United
States - such as Mexican Americans, Chinese Americans, Italian Americans -
or can take a more comparative, broader approach, comparing the experiences
of different ethnic groups within the U.S. or between the U.S. and other
countries. We especially welcome progressive approaches that help redefine
traditional notions of immigration and expand our understanding of
immigration and identity politics within a global context.

Suggested themes may include, but are not limited to:

Ø Immigrants and the Left

Ø Immigration and gender

Ø Ethnic identity, racialization and assimilation

Ø Transnationalism and the militarization of borders

Ø Immigration and the housing crisis

Ø Immigration and professional sports

Ø Immigration, citizenship, and voting rights

Ø State policies, economic regulations and trans-migration

Ø Forced migration and refugee movements

Ø Migration and globalization

Ø Immigration restrictions and human rights

Ø Cultural production by or about immigrants (literature, film, art,
music)

(If you're interested in this, let me know, and I can send the rest of the info - Lily)
